It is interesting to note that the Savoy Hotel was taken over in August 1905 by expeditions from Oxford, the US and Russia under the aegis of the Survey of Egypt (director H.G. Lyons) for the solar eclipse of 30th August.
In the grounds of the hotel, each expedition set up their own equipment and the results, both written and photographic, were widely published. The wife of the US expedition leader made special mention of the comforts of the hotel and the well-trained staff.
